The main goal of NIS2 (Network and Information Security) is to ensure that essential and important organisations in the European Union can handle cyberattacks.

These entities must be able to anticipate risks, react rapidly to incidents and recover as quickly as possible.

Governance and management responsibility

Incident reports

Any incident considered significant (article 23) must be notified to the competent authorities within 24 hours, then documented and shared within 72 hours.

NIS2 is the European Union directive that replaces the first NIS directive of 2016.

Its main objective is to strengthen the cybersecurity of organizations on a European scale, by imposing stricter standards for the protection of critical information systems.

It takes into account evolving threats, growing digital dependencies and the need for a security culture in organizations.

NIS2 targets a much broader spectrum than NIS1. It applies to :

essential entities (energy, transport, health, financial infrastructure, water, etc.),
important entities (manufacturing industry, research, food production, processing and distribution, etc.),
providers of critical digital services (cloud, data centers, online communication services)
and certain strategic companies which, if compromised, could significantly disrupt the economy or society.

Regulated entities must register with the competent authority, have their management bodies approve proportionate technical, operational and organizational measures to manage cybersecurity risks (such as supply chain security, fine-tuned access management and business continuity), and notify the authorities of significant incidents within the required deadlines.

Within 24 hours, the CSIRT must be informed if the incident is suspected to be of malicious origin, and if it could have a cross-border impact.

Within 72 hours, transmit updated information, an initial assessment of severity and impact, and indicators of compromise. You should also promptly inform your users if their service is affected, and the steps they can take to protect themselves.

Finally, no later than 1 month after notification, send the authorities a detailed description of the incident, the probable cause and the mitigation measures applied.
